Meeting a potential adopter in Tbilisi: what do you check before the handover?

By Mark F. · HAV HAV· 5 Aug 2026, 11:50

A friendly chat is not enough to know where an animal will live. People who have rehomed a cat or dog: did you meet every adult in the home, see windows or outdoor space, discuss landlord permission, agree a trial period or keep the microchip details until follow-up? We want a calm, respectful checklist rather than an interrogation. Topic prepared by the HAV HAV Community team. Add first-hand details and keep private addresses and personal data out of public replies.

For cats, ask specifically about balcony and window protection. 'We never open them' is not the same as physical safety.

If transport is involved, agree who brings a secure carrier or harness before the meeting day.

For rented flats, permission matters. A surprise complaint from the landlord can undo a careful adoption in one day.

A first meeting in the current home can show the animal's normal behaviour better than a rushed meeting on a pavement.

Keep a written handover record with contact details, known health information and what both sides agreed about follow-up.

Ask what happens during holidays and a future move. Those answers reveal more than asking whether somebody 'loves animals'.
